Many of us begin the path to our dreams on our own. It’s a lonely endeavor, especially if we don’t have the support group we had hoped for. However, just because it started that way doesn’t mean it has to continue that way forever!
If you’re serious about your dreams and accomplishing them, then you know you need to constantly be growing and learning. One of the BEST ways to do this is by surrounding yourself with incredible people who embody the life you want to live. Their values, ambition, intelligence, successes, and views are in alignment with where you want to go.
If you can get around like-minded people (dreamers!), then you will position yourself for incredible success.
As it says in Proverbs 13:20, "Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm."
We all know that we inevitably start to become like the people we hang around, but let’s take a closer look at four of the reasons why this is true:
Reason #1: We are the sum of the 5 people we hang around.
Better people inspire us and pull us up. I love being surrounded by people who are smarter, cooler, kinder, fitter, more loving, and more successful than me. Why? Because I know their awesomeness is inspiring me to be better, even if subconsciously!
Motivational speaker Jim Rohn is the one who once said the quote that many of us are familiar with:
"You're the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
Reason #2: If you’re around other dreamers, it’s easier to express yourself and be uplifted!
While we need to be loving and kind to everyone, especially our well-meaning loved ones who don’t quite understand our dream, we also need to be around people who GET IT and will inspire, motivate, and encourage us (that’s why I love you!).
If you’re always around people who are cynical, not as excited about your dream as you are, or are downright mean people, your dream is going to run out of steam. If you constantly have to defend yourself to that one friend or loved one, it can start to weigh on you. Make sure you have at least one person to whom you can turn on a down day and who will pump you up! A network of them is even better!
Reason #3: You can learn a tooon!
If you surround yourself with dreamers, movers and shakers, or people who are otherwise going places, you will learn a ton and save yourself much heartache—especially if they’re in your industry! While it can be tempting to bury your head in the sand and not want the advice of others, this isn’t the wisest course.
Many of us know this, yet it can be hard for entrepreneurs, especially us creative ones, to think we need help from others. If I’ve learned nothing else on my journey, it’s that YES, I do absolutely need the help and wisdom of others. To be surrounded by people who are wiser, more experienced, smarter, and more successful than me is a dream come true.
Reason #4: Ain’t nobody got time for negativity.
If your inner circle is currently one that tends to be made up of people who are negative, you might want to consider finding some new peeps to hang around. Listen, if you’re building a dream, you’re going to face enough obstacles, criticism, and hard times from the world.
Why do you want more of that from people who are supposed to be your friends? Even if they only make snide jokes about your dream, you and I both know those jokes hurt and can feel like a knife to your heart. If you still want to hang around them, great, but it might be wise not to talk about your dream with those who simply don’t get it.
NOTE: negativity is not to be confused with constructive criticism! If your inner circle offers you honest feedback because they genuinely want to help you, that’s awesome! Having that kind of friends or family is actually priceless. Being surrounded by only yes-men or yes-women is not good for your journey to success.
Who we surround ourselves with has a huge impact on our path to success! The people in our inner circle rub off on us, and we start to pick up their negative habits and outlooks without even realizing it.
Likewise, if you’re around happy and successful dreamers who are going places, you’ll inevitably be lifted up by them and find even more fuel for your dreams’ fires! You can also learn a ton from these people, especially if they’re a few steps ahead of you in the same journey.
The adventure you’re on is fun and exciting, yet will absolutely be super hard at times—so you don’t have time for negative people who don’t support your dreams and who are constantly criticizing them or trying to talk you out of them.
Surround yourself with the kind of people you want to become! If your current circle is a little wanting, see if you can beef it up. This does not mean you should suddenly ditch someone who’s not going the direction you want to be going, especially if they’re a dear friend or loved one. Maybe you can inspire them to be better, the same way the people who you want to add to your circle are for you!
